We were appointed to deliver a bespoke X-ray room installation within a live aerospace manufacturing facility. This high-specification space was required to support non-destructive testing (NDT) of precision-machined aviation components—playing a critical role in ensuring safety and quality standards across the production process.
The project included the construction of a secure, light-sealed X-ray room with a dedicated dark room for image processing, all delivered without interruption to ongoing site operations.
Scope of Works
The turnkey project comprised a full fit-out including structural works, finishes, and mechanical & electrical services:
- Composite Panel Walling System:
A freestanding walling structure was constructed using radiation-resistant composite panels, providing both structural integrity and containment performance. - Flooring & Ceilings:
Installation of hard-wearing, cleanable flooring systems and a full suspended ceiling to support environmental control and service distribution. - Dark Room Construction:
A purpose-built dark room was constructed at the rear of the X-ray facility, featuring:- Complete light-sealing
- Task-specific low-level lighting
- Ventilation for chemical use
- Fixtures and furniture for image processing workflows
- Painting & Finishing:
All surfaces were finished using high-performance coatings suitable for technical and low-contamination environments. - Specialist Lifting – Spider Cranes:
Due to the size and weight of the composite wall panels, spider cranes were deployed for internal lifting and positioning, ensuring safe and precise installation within a constrained working space.
Full M&E Package
A comprehensive mechanical and electrical package was delivered as part of the scope, including:
- Sprinkler System: Integrated fire suppression system installed to meet fire safety regulations
- Fire Detection: Full fire alarm and detection system installed throughout, interfaced with the site-wide system
- Lighting: Energy-efficient lighting solutions for both the X-ray and dark room areas, including emergency lighting provisions
- Electrical Works: Power distribution, containment, and connection of specialist equipment, including X-ray units and dark room apparatus
All M&E works were delivered to industry standards with a focus on performance, safety, and integration with client systems.
Live Environment Delivery
Working within a live manufacturing environment required:
- Strict adherence to health & safety regulations
- Isolation of work areas with minimal disruption to ongoing operations
- Close coordination with site management and technical teams
- Careful sequencing of high-risk activities such as crane use and electrical tie-ins
Outcome
The X-ray and dark room facilities were delivered on time, to specification, and with zero disruption to surrounding operations. The result is a fully operational, compliant, and highly functional inspection environment that strengthens the client’s non-destructive testing capabilities in line with aerospace industry demands.
Conclusion
This project exemplifies our ability to deliver high-performance technical environments with precision and control, even within live, safety-critical industrial facilities. Our in-house expertise across construction and M&E ensured seamless coordination and delivery—on budget, on programme, and with outstanding results.
