We were appointed by one of the UK’s leading Facilities Management (FM) companies to deliver a complex multi-station refurbishment programme across 18 operational railway stations throughout the north of England.
The project formed part of a wider delapidation and enhancement scheme to bring station environments up to a modern and compliant standard, addressing both functionality and public perception. Spanning numerous locations and involving a wide range of works, the programme required precise coordination, efficiency, and a steadfast commitment to public safety.
Scope of Works
This challenging programme covered both internal and external refurbishment works at each site, involving all major construction trades, including:
- Joinery
- Electrical installations and upgrades
- Lighting replacements
- Flooring and tiling
- Painting and decorating
- Roofing and minor structural repairs
- External works and finishes
- Signage replacement and touchpoint improvements
Several sites also required out-of-hours and 24-hour operations, to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of public access.
Live Environment Delivery
A key challenge of the programme was that all stations remained fully operational throughout the works. This required:
- Zero closures and continuous pedestrian access
- Robust safety measures and traffic management
- Close liaison with station managers and local authorities
- Phased programming to deliver efficiently without impact on train schedules or public movement
Working in busy, high-footfall public areas, our teams maintained a strong site presence while ensuring all works were conducted safely, cleanly, and discreetly.
Collaboration & Coordination
This project was delivered in close collaboration with the FM company and their end client, with daily coordination and progress updates ensuring:
- Programme targets were consistently met
- Safety and compliance standards were maintained
- Disruption to public and station operations was kept to an absolute minimum
Our ability to respond flexibly to each site’s unique constraints was key to maintaining momentum and consistency across such a large, distributed project.
Outcome
The project was successfully completed across all 18 stations, delivering improved, refreshed public-facing facilities in line with the client’s objectives and the station operators’ standards.
Our multi-trade capability, experienced workforce, and proactive communication ensured the works were delivered on time, safely, and to a high standard, despite the operational and logistical challenges involved.
Conclusion
This multi-site station refurbishment programme is a testament to our ability to deliver complex, safety-critical projects in live environments, without disruption to public services. By working hand-in-hand with a major FM provider and their client, we ensured consistent quality and performance across a wide geographic footprint—further reinforcing our reputation as a trusted delivery partner within the transport sector.
